According to Deadline, Rowland was supposedly amazed by the crowd's reaction, though the show went on.

"Presently, Chris Brown isn't here this evening so I'm accepting the award on his behalf," Rowland said, before quieting the crowd's cheers. "Excuse me…chill out."

Rowland proceeded, "But I wanted to say Chris, thank you so much for making extraordinary R&B music and I want to thank him for being an incredible performer.

I will take this prize (and) carry it to you. I love you. Congrats And congrats to every one of the candidates in this category.”

Brown didn't show up on the show because of reasons not authoritatively expressed.
